About two months ago I joined BlackPlanet.com because I wanted to understand black culture better and be more apt to speaking to yet another demographic in marketing terms. It’s unfortunate that I found it necessary to resort to such a means, but there are few black people who live and work in my environment and I went to a 2,000-count high school with only two black students, so I can’t imagine any of you will hold this against me.

That was a mistake.

I get photos like these in my inbox (not this one specifically) almost daily. Men and women whom I have never met approach me, and every single one of them appears to be either a prostitute or a spammer. I do not believe that this is an accurate representation of the black community, but I do believe that because of how BlackPlanet.com has been marketed, that it would be accurate to assume its usership is primarily made up of prostitutes and spammers.

I do believe that it is finally time to deactivate my account.
