Balls Fly at the Soc Media-Savvy 2009 PGA Championship
So, today is the first day of the 2009 PGA Tour Championship. This year’s tournament takes place in Chaska, Minnesota, and even though only a handful of rich patrons will actually be in attendance, the PGA has come through with a far-reaching live stream of the event complete with social media discussions on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
Users can catch awesomely high quality streams of the live TV broadcast, as well as a channel of marquee-only players like Tiger Woods and that other guy. There’s even a picture-in-picture option that kind of makes regular TV look dumb and old.
While this is hardly noteworthy (slow news day, sorry folks), it is cool to note that while the PGA is often looked on as a stodgy old institution engineered toward people who aren’t in their 20s and 30s, even they have begun to embrace—and efficiently utilize—social media and the realtime web in new and interesting ways.
